Do this whoever you end up calling. Half of what turns a fix into a rebuild happens in the hour before anybody qualified looks at it.
- Take a full backup now — files and database — even of the broken state
- Screenshot the exact error, including anything that looks like a file path
- Write down when it last worked, and what changed around then
- If you suspect a compromise, change the hosting and admin passwords
- If it is serving spam to visitors, put a holding page up while you sort it
- Don’t delete files that “look wrong” — that is the evidence, and often the site
- Don’t reinstall WordPress over the top; it hides the cause and rarely removes it
- Don’t restore an old backup before somebody has looked — it can reintroduce the hole and destroy what would have shown us where it was
- Don’t buy a security plugin subscription mid-incident; it will not remove what is already there
- Don’t let anybody remote in who will not say in advance what they intend to change
